SLONE SELECTED AS OFFICIAL ARTIST OF BAFANA BAFANA
during the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

(JUNE 10, 2010) JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA -- Bafana Bafana has named Richard T. Slone the official artist of the 2010 Bafana Bafana (South Africa) football team as they host the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ . Slone was selected from 160 internationally acclaimed artists and his artwork will be proudly used as the official image for Bafana Bafana.

The commissioned artwork was recently unveiled in South Africa announcing Slone as the selected artist after the organizers considered artist from all over the world. The artwork will used on an array of officially licensed merchandise including a special limited edition series.

"We are excited to have an artist with such understanding and enthusiasm for sports and football" says  Vivian Casaletti, managing director of SLAM, the agency that licenses Bafana Bafana.  "Slone's timeless artwork is filled with energy and emotion. His piece brings a human element to this historical event--the first ever World Cup on African soil. Slone has captured the excitement and passion of African football.  It is a perfect fit for celebrating Bafana Bafana."

"We couldn't ask for better people to work with on this project," says Joel Berman, CEO of The Joel Berman Consortium who has acted as a liaison between Bafana Bafana and Slone.  "It's an incredible opportunity to get involved in an entirely new venue of collectors. The international exposure has been amazing, and it's stimulating Slone artistically and emotionally to be part of such a significant event celebrating this historical World Cup. The fit and authenticity could not possibly be more appropriate."

Born in England, Slone has lived in a number of international locations. His travels, life as a Boxer, relationships and everyday interactions give him the experiences of different lives and cultures, which he uses as inspiration for his art. His paintings, created mostly in acrylic, have themes of life, sports and action, portrayed with a raw energy that conveys a sense of movement, struggle and fiery passion.  Slone prefers not to categorize his work; rather, he leaves it open so he can create freely, and the observer can determine the story being told in each piece.

Slone has always had a passion for art. At age 6, he was already creating portraits and giving his art to his friends and family. He participated in a number of group exhibitions in museums and galleries early in his career after his career as a boxer ended in the mid 1990's. He has been quickly rising to the top of the art world and has become one of the most sought after and accomplished young artists in the world.

Slone's busy schedule will continue in 2010. Later this month he will unveil his official commissioned painting for the International Boxing Hall of Fame, of which Slone has been the Official Artist since 1996. He has been commissioned to design a limited edition shirt for a major clothing line, and he will tour for various solo exhibitions throughout the year.

Slone’s art has become a staple at high profile events around the globe.  Collectors of his art range from celebrity clients and high-roller gamblers, to college kids who collect Slone designed apparel.  Slone is best known for his vividly colored images that capture detailed expression and motion, the kinetic captured in his work has brought critical acclaim.  Considered to be a leader in the new generation of sports artists, Slone follows a long tradition of artists who have painting sports such as George Bellows, Thomas Eakins and in more recent decades, LeRoy Neiman.  Owners of his originals include Donald Trump, Nelson Mandela, Hugh Hefner and Muhammad Ali.  He is the Official Artist of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and at only 35 years of age is one of the most accomplished emerging artists in the world.  Recently the National Geographic came to an agreement to publish his work over the next ten years.  He is nominated for Sports Artist of the Year 2010.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be held in South Africa from June 11 to July 11.  For more information about artist, Richard T. Slone, please visit sloneart.com. To learn more information regarding the World Cup please visit fifa.com.
